The Conflict Research Group is a multidisciplinary research unit at the University of Ghent (Faculty of Political and Social Sciences). It primarily analyses the micro-level of civil conflicts, with an interest in both livelihood and governance issues. Within this focus, it concentrates both on the impact of civil conflicts on local communities, and on the links between local and global dimensions of conflict. The CRG's cross-cutting analysis has led to the comparison of different geographical case studies, from Asia to sub-Sahara Africa. The main aims of the CRG are:

  • to provide theoretical and practical expertise regarding conflict related issues;
  • to promote an understanding of present-day conflicts in the wider public sphere;
  • to translate theoretical insights into practical policy recommendations for governmental and non-governmental organizations;
  • to strengthen the capacities of research institutes as well as individual researchers in the CRG’s areas of interest.

The study areas of the CRG can be subdivided into the following issues:

  • conflict and governance
  • conflict and livelihoods
  • the role of civil society
  • conflict and aid
  • terrorism
  • non-state armed actors

For examples of CRG projects, click here.

The members of the CRG primarily have a social sciences background (Political Science, International Relations, History, and Development Studies), while some have spent several years in the field as analysts or humanitarian workers. Several CRG analysts also carry out consultancies for governmental (i.e. ministries, parliaments and commissions) and non-governmental organizations.
